Replacing DPFE sensor - how can I get hoses unstuck?

Hi, I'm trying to replace a DPFE sensor on my 2002 Mazda Tribute. This is my first attempt at a DIY repair and I am having trouble getting the sensor off. I unhooked the part that plugs in with the thumb clip thingie but I can't get the the other part off where it connects to the two rubber hoses. It's stuck on the hoses and won't budge. Is it safe to spray something like WD-40 or is there something else I could buy to help loosen it? Thanks for any help... Francie :)

You'll have to twist the hose(s) to get it to break loose on the nipples. Then pull and twist them off. You can also use a large flat blade screwdriver to pry them from the sensor. They are easier to take off the metal pipes they go down to and then you can twist them off a lot easier with the sensor in your hand. Sometimes they are stuck on there so good that you end up ripping the hose(s). Most auto parts stores sell the DPFE high temp hose. You just cut to fit. Don't use any other type of hoses or they can melt or become brittle as glass. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

A booger picker & a can of throttle body cleaner works good for me. DS is correct you need the hose loose before trying to remove it or you will damage it. I just get the tip of the tool in between the hose & fitting, hit it with some spray and work the tool around until it pops off.... The 2nd one from the bottom works the best for me..... We'll see if this one shows....shows 4 me...

Thank you. I'm still trying. And thanks for the tip about the hose. I was worried about ripping them, that's good to know I can replace those too if I need to.

Thank you. These pics are showing. I will try to pick up one of those tools. Do you spray the tool and then stick it in there or do you stick the tool in and then spray around it?

Spraying the tip won't hurt. I usually get the tip in, pry a little to expose as much of the fitting as possible and then just spray while I work the tool around. It's usually a pretty fast deal......It took longer to type this than what it will take to get the hose loose....... any pick wil do...you don't have to go out & buy one special for this

It worked! I used a screwdriver to loosen it a bit and twisted the hoses at the base where they connect to the metal posts. Once I got one off the other was easy. I swapped it out with the new part and I'm all set. Now I'm hoping the engine light goes off so I can get my emissions! Thanks again to you both!!!! Francie

It may take a while to clear the stored code that way. Go to the parts store and have them clear it for you. You will have to drive for a while after that to wait for all the monitors to reset. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
