With so many items that use gaskets, like Water Pumps, Thermostats, oil pans , transmission pans etc I have had great luck using very little gasket maker (not the real sticky adhesive sealants) to hold the gasket in place for installation which in many cars is in tight areas.

With the pump or pan clean (Carb or Brake cleaners are good for this) smear a minimal amount on and use the old plugs to hold it in place till dry. It also keeps the holes for the bolts clear of any sealant/gasket maker from getting into the device you are working on. I also like to smear some grease (usually silicone based) on the side that will contact engine or item so if you are ever back there again you won't have a job at the gasket scraping. OEM doesn't call for sealers in general, I just like the time saved from NOT folding a gasket and Not having to bust you behind cleaning gasket surfaces again.

These ideas take time to wait for things to dry. Interesting how some time up front can save countless hours down the road.

As always - you decide on what is right for your project,
