post icon Scope question Sign In

I just bought a handheld one channel lab scope and had a question.

I always see two test probes on scopes ( I'm guessing one is for ground and one is for the signal wire) in all the autotive applications but mine only has one.
Is this a problem or will my scope work the same just not needing a ground?

My question is more pointed at Hammer time cause Tom greenleaf said he would know but anyone can chime in.
I'm new to scopes so any tips or info would be great!

Thanks

Re: Scope question Sign In

Just think of it as a positive and negitive on a multi-meter.

like when testing a ABS sensor use your sig lead on + output and COM on the - output of the sensor spin the tire by hand you can watch the scope patter.

you can do some reading on different wave patterns for diaging different things, injectors, coils, crank/cam sensors and etc..

If you can attach a low amp probe you can also do injector performances, fuel pump perfomance/condition and many other things.. that if your scope does amps and has fast enough response time. I use VantagePro scope at work amazing pice of equipment I actually bought my own.

Re: Scope question Sign In

From what I read in the instruction manual online for that specific model you use the probe on + side,

exsample for wheel speed sensor..

set it to 5v DC
time devision to 30 seconds
probe set at 1x on the + side and tool should have a reading when you spin the wheel.

You may have to calibrate your scope too the process in the your instruction booklet.
