The old kind of parts dip cleaner

I had an old 5 gal. can of Berryman parts dip that finally ate a hole in the bottom and went all over the garage floor. The question is, can that type of parts dip be purchased anymore? I'm talking about the same stuff you could buy 20-25 years ago and before. I bought a quart can of Berryman and it's not the same, doesn't work nearly as well. Berryman sells another product they market as "Professional", is that the same as the "old stuff"? This problem I'm having could be because I'm in California. California outlaws all kinds of things due to their own environmental laws. I'd like to buy another 5 gallon bucket if I can find the right stuff. Or if somebody has a recommendation, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Glenn

Don't expect any product that works to stay legal for use for long in CA. From MA - the other coast same problems. Can't buy plain soap with phosphates in it - harmless mostly just promotes growth like a fertilizer making waste water hard to process.
You can't buy bottom paint for boats in CA that really works either because the active ingredient is copper! So was a penny - the coin. Not since about 1981 - check - it's zinc with a copper color since then.
What did that product do that you need it to do? Degrease parts? I'm not familiar with it by name.
An acid or a solvent?
You might be out of luck to buy or dispose of anything that works,

You might have to drive out of state to get it. I get gallon pails of the Berryman at my local parts hose in WI. I know I can get parts cleaner in 5 gallon pails at Advance, its about $100 a pail. I'm not sure if its the same as the old formula though. The gallon cans are sold as carb dip and it does work awesome. Living where you are your options are quite limited. Everyone out there seems to be going to water based stuff.

Great to see you chiming in Nick. MA has its nose right up CA's butt on things.
OP - out of state or check for real gallon cans of lacquer thinner which I think is the base product. Wildly expensive when I still see it @ Home Centers.
Small cans available to test. Another should be named "Naptha" is fast to evaporate and highly flammable - most is.
The real fear is dissolving plastics and even tolerant rubber with what you might find.
Just on the topic of parts cleaning: Cheap but SAE rated SE or higher Motor Oil or ATF (almost any) can degrease parts just slower then a lanolin (like hand cleaner) removes the oil then can rinse with water.
Read containers for what is really in it if they tell the truth!

I wonder if it was Berryman/Chemtool. That was a carb dip. I use the one branded by NAPA now. It works better than the chemtool. I've also been using Oxy Clean on some things and to my surprise it works.
The NAPA carb dip is like $25.00 or so bucks a gallon. Let it sit too long and it will rot through it's can.
