Wrench Question	Sign In

I am looking to buy my first cordless impact wrench. I am looking at an 18V. I noticed some have friction rings and others have pin detent. What is the difference? What are the pros and cons to each? I have no idea which one to get and don't want to get the wrong one. Thanks in advance.

All my own are air and the friction ring works fine. You may be disappointed with the power of a cordless electric so be able to return it is my suggestion,

The pin locks in better but you need to put a pick into the little hole of your socket to take it off. Friction rings are faster to change and when you do wear it out you can get new ones. Are you looking at this for pulling parts at a salvage yard or DIY work and you don't have an air compressor big enough to run a normal gun? I've used them before in a pinch and never was too impressed with them.

Some of those lithium wrenches are outrageously expensive. The Matco man is always stopping by with a bag of those things trying to sucker one of us into buying one.

Snap on has one my son has used in his car hauling biz. THe gun has 600ftlb in reverse . It will remove and install all wheels on his 1 ton dodge dually using a fresh charged batt. THe price is inline with its air countepart + batteries . He has had it bout a year. He carries on truck for flats.
