Got a 97 altima and I can't get that pipe that goes from the exhaust man to the intake man to thread into the exhaust man hole. Does that pipe have to b there for the car to run or can I cap off both ends and be done with it

? I'm seeing two different manifolds showing up so you may have to re-thread a hole or thru bolt it. Converter is part of the manifold and should fasten to a pipe with a flex area looking like this......... Exhaust manifold to that pipe should look like this showing 6 bolts (??) or holes so either one or the other, both match and just holes or studs that are part of one or the other - unsure right where you are having problems other than these always are sticky at best if not almost unrecognizable as a bolt or what it is if very rusted. New parts should match or you have the wrong parts. Only thing I can think of is perhaps one calls for CA only emissions being the different one? So, my own confusion is manifold w the converter (cheaper one) looks like this which doesn't match at all to me but this just looking up parts and pics........... Some sense to this is the converter itself is right there attached - 6 bolts one end to manifold and 3 to the pipe like this........ Is it the 3 connection messing you up or where? To me these appear you just remove old and thru bolt with new hardware and gasket for the 3 hole connection. If one is threaded re-thread it if you can or if room thru bolt it. Not totally sure where you are in trouble except this stuff is always fussy and torches (oxy/acet) can really help with getting things OUT but back in should be easy, T (edit in) YES the parts/pipe all have to be there - you can't just plug something off????????

Its the one flanged pipe that bolts to the top of the man/cat

OK - That appears to have 6 holes and possibly no gasket if a true flange (bell looking) connection. BTW - was editing my reply while you posted no doubt so look up or I said you can't just plug anything off and run without. It should go back they way you found it except for the problem you fixed - exact OE matching part or you'll regret it, T

I had ordered an aftermarket header for it and everything fit except that the header did not clear the alternator. I have to get this flange bolt back into its home on the exhaust manifold. It came out without any probs, I don't know why it won't go back in.

OK - That's your whole problem if you mean "header" as the exhaust manifold or trying to delete the converter or alter it you'll be messed up forever. Whatever your reason for "aftermarket" by fit is OK by another maker but not altered or just endless issues. You already said it didn't clear the alternator so it proves my case - OE parts by fit or nothing but troubles. I know converters are expensive and folks try to eliminate them if for price or think the performance will improve but it won't and WILL cause problems - it's needs to be the way it was designed - period! If you wish to seriously change exhaust and everything fit properly and be right I suggest an exhaust specialty place that does that. In short your problems are all in wrong parts, T

Ooops: Off on wrong tangent. For that I would be at a dealer for parts and yes it's needed or wouldn't be there, Tom
