oil dipstick tube on 1991 GMC k2500 small block 350

Anybody with any experience with replacing the dipstick tube on this engine..not sure if its just rusted and stuck in the block or it is threaded in? Having a hell of a time getting the tube out of the block..thanks

Should be pressed in. They can be a real pain getting out and you usually end up having to remove the oil pan to push it up from the bottom. If you use vise grips on it, you'll probably end up needing a new tube. I'd lube the heck out of it and see if you can get it to twist.

They usually have a bracket half way down. Make sure you got that. It usually has to be tapped out. If you can access it from below and get a long prybar under the bracket and tap it up with a hammer. If you can't do that you may be able to get a pair of needle nose vice grips into the hole on top and tap them upward.

So basically at this point it rusted out about 5 inches from the block and I've tried letting it set for a few days with free all and pb blaster. Tried the vise grips and finally got it to turn a little with threading a piece of rod into the tube that was left and thought it turned but looked like it was tightening..so basically the only option left is dropping the oil pan? What kind of job is that? I have a new tube coming but noticed that the mainstream auto part suppliers can't get the part, had to get it on the internet..thanks for the info

If you have a threaded rod screwed into the tube, you maybe able use a piece of flat metal and then slide that onto your all thread and install a nut. While someone holds the piece straight use a pry bar and hammer to pop it out of the hole.

Be careful if you drop that pan. If you start hitting that thing from the bottom and it kinks or mushrroms the tube, you'll never get it out of there.

The 3/8 threaded rod was just a bit too big so I had to taper it with a grinder so i had a hard time getting it to grab like it needed to..there's not much left to the tube so my options are very limited..good idea though

I have the tube spinning quite freely but still having trouble. I'm trying to avoid dropping the oil pan. When you say it is pressed in there do you mean machine pressed in or is it just pressed by hand?

Probably something in between. It probably fit pretty loose when it was new but now it has all kinds of varnish built up on it and it has to be forced through that. It's probably in about 3 inches.

Finally got it out with the threaded rod, attaching a piece wood to rod and tapping it out. Thanks for the help!
