1929 3 door Chevrolet coupe Sign In

I have a 1929 3 door Chevy that I would like to restore back to the original state. Is there a book, video, or outside help? I have a shop and plenty of tools to restore it. I would get the motor rebuilt by a professional along with some other components. I can do most kinds of construction but not much of a mechanic. I want to take it down to the frame and redo anything that needs work. Thanks, John

? You just said YOU want to "restore" this to original condition but are not much of a mechanic?
You still need to know what needs doing and what to send where even if you can swap items out.

Join a club for these cars or I still suggest checking out www.HemmingsMotorNews.com which is a place for old vehicle anything from places that do work or parts available.

Are you planning on finishing this off upholstery, paint and all the details as well? You'll need either a one stop local place and a ton of bucks and just have it all done or find out who in your area does what.

Engine - diagnosed as to what it needs up to a full overhaul. Again find out who would take that on. Doable but takes more time for silly parts and a machine shop willing to dig up the specs for another who should know. Very basic but still time.

Are you sure you even want to be the ring master of the assorted trades it takes to restore even a basic car like this?

Re: 1929 3 door Chevrolet coupe Sign In

OK - Another thought because of the age of this car. Do get a real paper copy of their issue I think still sold at a Walgreens near me.

Reason is at the age you may be finding both advertised web sites for parts or services or just a phone # and not inventoried, sorted and put on any web site and wont be. You should be ok to buy just one issue and ask if one doesn't have what you need who or where might from there.

Job 1 is have fun doing it. If you intend on making $$ at restoring vehicles know that most people don't,

Re: 1929 3 door Chevrolet coupe Sign In

My uncle bought the car in the 60's and gave it to me a couple years ago. It's been sitting in a metal building. I think it would be fun fixing it up and giving it back. I hope I could restore it for $20,000. It was running before he sit it up in his barn in the 80's. The roof is rotting out and the radiator is shot. I wish there were some videos of how to restore old cars. My plans are to buy a bunch of plastic bins to label the parts. Take pictures and videos. I hope I could restore it in my spare time in the next two years.

! Videos on restoring a car? IDK but look out there. There's so many silly details that will end up specific to what's right in front of you it would be one heck of a collection of how to's for what.

Rusted out roof! When did that happen - in storage or like that when running in the 80s?

If truly dry storage and you can even nudge engine to turn you can probably get it to run as well as it did but still tons of assorted work.

Rust my friend is the end all of restorable vehicles and requires a "no limit" cost if you want it absolutely like new. I've seen part of one done and ones completed. Hard to put prices to what you want it to end up really being. A cobbled and non original but nice looking and running or to the letter like a new car again. Wild cost difference. You would need quite some space to sprawl everything out as well.

Again with the rust - know it's either game over for that vehicle or get another un-rusted one to combine cars into one just the metal and assorted parts.

Upholstery - a whole trade unto itself - have to ask for costs by someone who does it for this to your specs.

It's going to be a huge deal who can do what parts of the job around you that will really matter a lot. Dinky parts can be shipped but if you wanted the whole car acid dipped to bare metal and build it with everything all metal all perfect you need tons more $$ or settle for less well done.

Perhaps find a club for antique cars around you and see if you can get someone to take a look in person at it and with you can suggest the approach and who does what to the level you want.

Do look for some videos and or still pics of a car from start to finish. Choose something this age also as it pre-dates plastics and what may look like plastic is Bakelite (Google out that word) and even I don't know who right now where you would get that stuff fixed or fake it with plastic as needed/wanted.

For a while got into some wild antiques not just car things. OMG it never ends.

Right now just pulled out an antique coffee grinder like this..........

Sounds real stupid but knob is in the drawer of it missing a nut and bolt that any could do but will go on a total hunt for an old set nut and bolt hopefully with a square nut which would have been used and bet I find one in this mess I live in! Laugh.

That's probably the age of the car you have for example. Not even old for some stuff of that sort - meaning small items of interest to some and junk for another - such is life with old things cars or otherwise. See I could put any new nut and bolt on that and you wouldn't notice - I would.

Back to biz - know what is available in your area for parts of the work on the car. There's no real way to do every detailed thing yourself for a ONE time something,

Thanks, The car doesn't have rust but the wood roof needs replace. It's only a 2 foot hole. It's still intact but needs repaired/replaced. Every thing is time and money.

Re: 1929 3 door Chevrolet coupe Sign In

Wood would be it's own thing and can't really advise on that much except right type of wood and try to find specs if possible?

Trying to find a pic of this "3dr" idea and struggling. Is this a 3rd back door or one side have 2 doors? Not familiar or took notice I guess when at some car shows over the years.

See if I can make a pic show or try to post one if you can of the actual car. Sample pic and may not show or expire......

^^^^
Was there, is this the car you mean?

Not the whole point just a general idea,

I fixed your link to make it appear here. That body is actually in pretty good shape.

Will $20,000 get it back to 1929 specs?

I doubt you can do a "frame off" restore for that money.

How attached are you to it?

Like HT said, looks like its in very good shape.

Find a car guy like Danny Koker , probably pay you good money for it.

Re: 1929 3 door Chevrolet coupe Sign In

? Putting a cost for what it would take is real hard. You could spend that much on just wild paint and upholstery and a couple details.

One thing is now that we see this is IMO it's pretty rust free which is a huge help. Just know that doing anything that cuts corners like a lousy level paint job makes it harder to redo another day.

Cost factors are also the space it takes up just to have it whether fixed up or not for a thing you aren't going to use daily or could rent out and be cash positive without it at all. Understand that's out of the question as you want this car no matter what.

Question on this > Why are you calling this a 3 Door in subject line? I could only find the word "Coupe" when searching for what it looks like,

Those are called 3 window coupes
Very desirable to the hot rodders.
