Hi. First and foremost, this is a GREAT site! The advice I was given helped tremendously. I have a 1948 Desoto that tends to run hot during stop and go traffic. Advice? Also, what is the best way to install a modern, not fancy, sound system in my car. (6 volt positive ground) Thanks.

kevin; Had a couple of DeSotos. A '56 two door hardtop with a hemi, and a '61 with a 383. Ah, the good old days. Have the radiator 'flow tested'. Don't forget, these did have thermostats, too. Could be that you have one that's stuck open and not allowing the coolant to cool down. I know, sounds backwards, but possible. You may have a problem on the stereo, though. Years ago, you could buy a stereo that would have a switch on the back for neg. or pos. ground. Don't know if they are still available. I let the smoke out of one when I was young and stupid. An internet search may find you one. Had a '40 Ford Coupe with 6V pos. ground and found a stereo for it, so it's possible. Loren SW Washington

Been watching with marginal ideas There would be a way to convert 6 to 12v just for the radio and separate that from the rest of the car. It's off the wall but rather than go nuts at Radio Shack building some device I don't think you'll find I think I'd get a good jumper box with the 12v power ports and basically forget the cars regular electrical system and keep box charged. It would last for hours unless you went wild with watts of stereo. I know that's a bit hack but would work. I'd make the power a plug in to that box and you can use the box for jumping or for the port anywhere you wish too so it's not a waste. It would mean you would lose clock and presets if disconnected OR use a female in-line thing for a 9v battery placed in proper polarity for when jumper box is unhooked. 9v plug/connextors with red/black wire are available at Radio Shack and other places fairly cheap. Don't leave the battery on/connected when hooked to box power. Another and all depends on how much you care - get a good boom box battery powered and set it on back seat. I did that for a 900 mile trip once when surprised by a down radio/stereo. Those are available with CD/Tape and remote will bounce from the front to change stations or other features like if aimed at interior rear view mirror. I admitted that was off the wall T PS: This all guessing it's not your daily driver!

Summer of '42? Geeez. Just how old do you think I am? LMAO. Had it from '63 to '86. (that's 1963, not 1863) I tried uploading a pic, but they are all 'too large'. Sure wish Car Junky would fix that. If you'll PM me your email, I'll send you one. Loren SW Washington

I can't remember. I fell asleep while he was talking. When I asked Mrs. Ford how she liked the play, she slapped me. What a bi**h! Loren SW Washington

hi, bubbatom here, i have a 1940 chevy that needed a fm sterio. i found on ebay a "Archer" power inverter 6 to 12 volt fairly reasonable. you might try to locate one for yourself but be careful some of those units were neg grd and pos grd. they don't have a lot of power but it beats listioning to boring am talk radio. i am happy with mine as i cruise around. be sure to install a off switch on the power inverter as i found that they draw power when the radio is off. dead battery. but you will get used to how to operate it... happy motoring!!!
