1948 Desoto dies/stalls/no power Sign In

This just happened today. The car suddenly died while driving. As though the engine was turned off, certainly not getting any gas. It simply sputtered, then died. I did let it coast on a long stretch of road and it seemed to resume power by itself. However, as I was trying to get it home, it stopped. I pressed the start button, nothing happened. Complete silence. I pressed it again a few moments later, it fired right up only to die again. I managed to get it to "sputter" home. Help!

This car is a bit before me so some guessing involved. No reaction from a starter button means a poor connection some place, the button or the starter. Can't say - you have to check with a test light when screwing up.

Running poorly? Are points and timing on target? If you get this to run again what it the voltage at a raised idle? If low the ignition won't behave. Look at points. If transfer from one to the other they should go. Yes you can file those oldies and re set them but not as good as good new ones. Look at new ones too! Used to have to align them even new!

Right now I can't think of ONE thing that could cause both issues? Maybe it will come to me?

Hey Tom.

The car runs fine. (Or I suppose at this point "ran") No misfiring. Just the sudden and/or loss of all power. Full tank of gas. Thanks.

Check fuel delivery volume with a glass jar. Should fill it rather quickly AND you might see a problem with the fuel.

Guess at pressure for fuel from pump is 4-6 PSI or so. I should fill a quart jar pretty fast and NO sediment.

That still doesn't explain the engine not cranking by button, key which is another something??

Yeah, right. Who you trying to kid? Remember dirt? When God commanded: "Let there be light", you flipped the switch. SmileSmileSmile
