I recently purchased this as a fixer upper and I'm running into problems. Originally, it was running rough so I decided to change the plugs and the points, and now it doesn't start. I think I'm not getting any fire from the coil, as I put the plug wire close to the plugs, tried to start and I got nothing, no shock. I'm thinking I did something wrong with changing the points, so if anyone can help me with the process in changing them, it would be much appreciated. This is my first time posting so I apologize if there is any information I'm missing. I'll be checking this forum often so if you have any additional questions, please ask I will answer them as quickly as possible to help expedite this whole thing. You may have a defective set of point but it's more likely just installed wrong. Make the the wire is connected in the right position and not touching the frame of the points anywhere. Make sure they are adjusted properly. Get the points up on high cam and it you don't have a feeler gauge, use a matchbook cover so it slides through the gap snugly without pushing the contacts open any more. DivinedSin; Once you have the points set and have it running, look to the rear of the engine where it meets the bell housing on the passenger side. Down, low, you'll see a hole with a pointer. That is where you will see the 'timing' mark when the engine is running with a timing light. Can't remember, but '51 may still be a 6V system? Negative ground? Make sure that you have a timing light that will work on that electrical system. Be sure to have the vacuum advance disconnected and the engine idling below 700 rpm when adjusting the distributor. I like to mark the timing mark with 'White Out' so it's easier to see. You can do this by 'bumping' the engine over, very slowly, until you find the mark on the flywheel. A remote starter works great for doing this. Wish I could send you a pic, but all of my old stuff is in hardback manuals. Sigh. Loren SW Washington

DivinedSin; 2:00 in the morning...just remembered...the flywheel will have a 'dot' about 1/8" diameter rather than a 'mark'. Okay, going back to sleep. LOL. Loren SW Washington
