Local widow might sell her husband's 1957 Ford Fairlane 500. Friend says it is in good condition. Hoped to get help from some of you experienced folks on what to look for. I know about the three speed with overdrive and the faulty first and reverse slider gear (had one in the early 60's) but things about rust, other running gear, etc. is not my expertise. Also, if someone could give me a price range I would be truly great full.

! Surprisingly not sure what you mean about the reverse gear issue or what fixed it. Worse not totally familiar with this car except that it should be a chassis car not unit body and many versions made from same body like 2dr. 4dr. Wagon, maybe a "Business Coupe" which had no back seat.
Rust is always the costly killer so price is later find out the real rust condition. Common areas, floors, lower doors, trunks and full blown frame rot. Add upper body where windshield is mounted too.
How was it stored or used periodically? It all matters on what will go wrong if just left sit someplace probably too much wrong and hard enough when all was done and cared for perfectly.
Price: IMO not on a highly desired list like exactly a 57 Chevy if trashed would be worth it for parts - big bucks as the Chevy known for the HUGE rear wings on rear quarter panels.
Price again: Check what others are asking now for ones for sale for a clue first. Ads do not mean that's what folks will pay for it just a clue and how many you find parts or what.
Any deal boils down to what each party agrees to no matter what a car or some rare thing.
The car would really need to be appraised unless you know lots about it and really want it no matter what.
Without knowing real condition and how original it is price range would be all over the place from "Free - get this junk out of my sight right on up to many thousands,

Thanks for the input. I haven't seen the car but have great confidence in my buddy who told me about the car. Know about 57 Chevys. Bought my used 57 Ford in 1963 for $595.00. 57 Chevys we're going for $1,700.00 to $2,000.00 during the same time.

I'll probably get a professional to look at the car before purchasing.

Bring a magnet and check for bondo cover ups that always show back up and not a good fix for much of anything.
Pricing oil and or even unique stuff is hard at best. Look at some auctions where starting prices get overbid by mega bucks or another can't muster a bid.
I deal with this with furnishings more than cars 3 good ones I restored simply whimsical not to make a buck and sure didn't.
Try hard to know just what it still is. Original still counts vs wild alterations that can't be undone if you care.
#1 it's my opinion if your objective is to make $$ know that most people lose at this game. Add up the storage of it if nothing else unless a quick flip without touching it.
I didn't go hunting but a great resource is www.HemmingsMotorNews.com which is still the old vehicle market place for the whole cars and all the services and parts as well.
Check but think you can still get a paper copy where magazines sell usually chain pharmacies. One is enough as the ads will list out websites loaded with more info.

Sounds new now compared to this but one more resto to go for me. An '88 not even old compared to your venture and in OE shape bought it in 91 so know the thing in and out. Almost never even wet and really just a good clean up no body work at all needed. Same game, will I make a buck on that thing? Not sure of that either as the fix is nothing so I'm comparing what I paid for it at 3 years old.
This part of old cars is a sport for most. If that serious you already wouldn't be asking questions about it.

Good luck and hope it works out and all involved are happy with the deal and the car works out for you,

Followed your link to hemming and found several 57s that looked interesting. Thanks for the link.

If this is your thing and happens with this or another that will get you all you need. Stupid stuff and the places or individuals who have it or not leads to who does.
I still say buy ONE in real paper not a subscription the links, phone #s, emails and sites should all be listed. When one doesn't have something there's a high chance they already know other good bets to chase something down.
Good luck. Try to buy right so if you find this isn't for you then can sell out a lot easier. It's not for everyone,

Tom
