Hello everybody I have a 1959 Chevy truck with the big back window. And I have been taking it apart and restoring it. And it is now time to remove the badly cracked windshield. But my question is how do I remove it. I know there is some trim covering the edges of the windshield. But that's all I know i don't know the rest and would really apreciate instructions on how to remove the windshield.

Wow! Just know that especially "windshield" glass is or seems it's own thing and strongly suggest an automotive glass specialty shop that will take this on.
Been ages now and restoration of my own by chance didn't need glass at all. What I found is a 55-59 YouTube video of this just being apparently taken out and put back in. Noted was the rubber isn't apparently reusable at all and not sure if common to many others or not - can't know quickly anyway.

So if a total restoration depending on how far you are going could be great to do paint with the windshield OUT.

You said "windshield" to me means front not rear and could to some so search on or say so.

I think the video will convince you that a pro shop in auto glass is the real final answer. You may have to hunt down the rubber and the glass?

Did a lot of searching on this and enough for now. This is the link to see it done for windshield and what it entails, tools minimal but perfection in the job critical. Others I've tossed on other vehicles improperly placed cracked by themselves a few months AFTER installation - Arggh!

Just from memory of my own and may be out of biz was the Steele (sp?) GM only made new duplicate rubber for a pretty impressive assortment of vehicles new aftermarket.

Good luck. It's whacked but just watching this has my heart racing not to bust the new window putting it back if not exactly right as expected!

You have no idea what kind of undertaking this is.

We mechanics don't attempt this either. We pay the glass people.

I was shocked HT that even that old the rubber if new really can't be re-used again! That alone bugs me to really seek the right glass place not just any!

Spare you from watching the 16 minute show on it. You use a clothesline in a slot of this rubber for installation and remove it which tightens it up. Uses common windshield caulking too but has to be cut out to remove not a chance to save the rubber.

I would have guessed an easy job as they go and if that video is correct it's harder than average for even glass people! Tom
