1962 ford falcon DIY Sign In

Hello All,

I just joined this forum, I recently bought a 1962 Ford Falcon. It has a straight 6 engine, it looks easy enough to maintenance. So far I have learned to change the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Now I want to change the fuel filter. I am worried about the gas lines and if pressure is a concern. Can anyone give me some pointers, where do I start?

Thanks Leigha

Hi, (moved the thread to Antique Car Talk if you don't mind)

Owned a few of those back when.

Fuel filter: It should either be in-line or screw into carb if all is original. Been a while - some could be under a bail on fuel pump itself. Still easy enough. You can just about get a filter for lawn mowers for these as they are low pressure.

If this uses a filter at the pump there's a rubber seal that should be renewed if you touch it. Have it first! We used to put in-line ones in lots of cars back when that you could see thru and skip difficult ones. Watch out not to strip ones that may screw into carb - don't use teflon tape - the threads are made to seal by themselves and tape shards will cause you to learn all about rebuilding the carb which may be unnecessary now.

Ask away - I'll recall something about these good old cars,

Hey so did it work?
My filter is in a bail under fuel pump and i cant get it apart. My car cuts out randomly going up hills and i think its either the fuel pump or filter. I wanted to replace filter but cant get it apart.

Thanks

Just answered under other 62 Falcon post. It can be loosened and will just knock loose when bail is free like with a plastic end of screwdriver or twist bowl by hand, rock it around. Gasket could be cork or rubber now - just be sure it doesn't leak when finished,

No hoses need come off. It's just a bowl with a bail. Inside is the filter and a spring to hold it pushed in place. As said in the other post the metal "band" type bails might not swing totally out of the way but will allow the bowl to drop down enough to wiggle it out to clean out yukey stuff and replace the filter. The bails are designed so you have a hard time dropping them and losing them.

I still have a vehicle with the glass one and just a screen to clean but you can see the water settle to the bottom and know when to dump it out. 61 year old thing of mine but I guess that's too high tech for anything today where the filters need be expensive, hard to replace and God forbid you be able to do that without buying something, getting a code reading and so on,
