1967 elcamino backfire

1967 chevy el Camino 283, 2 barrel.
Backfires through the tail pipe
changed oil and plugs, was good for 2 months and started again.
any ideas?
How do I check for an exhast leak, I have headers? DO you think that the lifters could be a problem? If so I was told that the adjustment would be to adjust down until it quits chattering then 3/4 turn forward. Does that sound correct? The compression looks OK. What would timming be in high altitude? ie:colorado

Take a good compression test and check your ignition timing. Make sure you don't have any exhaust leaks near the engine.

When its cold start it up and put your hand around the headers near the gasket flange. You do it cold so you don't burn the hell out of yourself. You are looking for a feeling like a fan on you. It doesn't matter if you have headers or exhaust manifolds, procedure is the same. You will feel the hot air blowing out. But noise cues you in on where to look. You don't just set timing by altitude, and there are a lot of variables at play here. Was this car from the area or found elsewhere? May need a rejet to account for your altitude but would require an AF meter plumbed into the exhaust.

Another way to check for exhaust or vac leaks is to get about 3ft of 1/4 inch vac hose . PLace one end up to ear . Slowly move other end around areas where leaks are suspected . such as gaskets , flanges , vac tees , couplings etc . You will know when you have found one .
