So - I'm in the market for a new car. (Or new to me, at least) Whatever is wrong with my Saturn, no one can figure it out - and even if they do, I suspect it'll be more than the car is even worth.

So, the sensible part of me says to find a relatively young, sturdy used car.

Until I saw this, of course. http://bham.craigslist.org/cto/1377905051.html This is a car I've always wanted, and it's in the price range I was looking for. However - I need something reliable, that I can drive to work every day. So - in your expert opinion, how reliable will the car be? Can I trust it? Or will it break down frequently, and require repairs that are going to push that 5K price tag upupup the longer I have it?

I don't mind minor, relatively inexpensive repairs, but I really need something I can depend on. Is this something I could really do without breaking the bank, or should I give it up as a pipe dream?

That price is about double what that car sold for back then and it was overpriced then. This is probably one of the most unreliable cars ever made. It's air cooled. It cannot handle sustained highway driving. They have the worst heater design ever made. If you want a reliable used car, that certainly is not the one. Find yourself a nice little Toyota or Honda. You'll be a lot better off.

IMO without unreal attention to detail in storage it's still an old car and things will happen out of thin air if you start driving it every day.

Again just my opinion - I didn't like them new and wouldn't now! They use more fuel than the largest cars that are newer - late 80s and up so there's no bargain there.

On the plus side - parts should still be easily available,
