Search Auto Parts Search 65 galaxy500xl 390 tranny slipsin drive but not reverse Sign up here!   Email This Post Auto Repair Home>> Automotive World>> Antique Car Talk djimbeau New User Apr 30, 2013, 7:05 PM Post #1 of 3 (2026 views) 65 galaxy500xl 390 tranny slipsin drive but not reverse Sign In 1965 ford galaxy500xl with a 390 automatic transmission 3 speed, cars been sitting forever last e i drove it slipped for the first time was kinda low on fluid and we tried topeel out and it started slipping.it managed to make it into the driveway , then just sat for years.NOw i need it to get around,it starts and runs fine i put fresh fluid into it and it pulled strong and even burnt rubber. the reason i believe this transmission is still good is because when i took off it pulled so good the car fishtailed it had so much power. welll now the tranny just slips in drive one day later....its old original motor and tranny.SO my question is what is my best way to go about diagnosing this problem so i can get on the road. i was gonna tow it to a shop but i dont wanna pay the new andd improved rebuild price for modern transmissions for and old simple trans ission thats probably way easier to fix for an expert.Also i feel liike its something that can be fixed easily like a pump or valve or filter. If so, you might have a heater core leaking. As for the transmission, slippage means the transmission has to come apart. It probably has hard seals that is causing loss of fluid pressure in apply components. Have you actually talked to some of the tranny shops in your area to see what it would cost to go through that Cruise o matic? It may not be as much as you think. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
