Chevy carb problem? Sign In

My '72 Chevelle has (for the time being) a 307 2bbl which idles & runs beautiful, except on acceleration. If I ease into the pedal, it's fine, but too hard & it bogs down or kills. I replaced the vacume advance with a used one & it helped, but not to my satisfaction. Should I go with a new advance or look elsewhere for the problem?

Check that the advance diaphragm is good but it's more likely the "accellerator" pump in the carb. CAREFULLY (yes it could flash at you if real hot in there), just look down carb after it has recently run (that way you know gas is in carb) and push the throttle by hand while looking down and see TWO squirts of gas. If those are missing it will stumble big time and the rubber plunger is available to replace for that. Those should be included in carb kits as well. If not hit back - bet I've got several NOS in my shop- they were common!

Also, check the centrifugal advance. Those were famous for "freezing" up. Especially, the HEI type.
