1957 Chevy 150 ~ all original
6 cylinder Powergilde
32,000 org. miles
My 57 Chevy's front driver's side wheel seems to be "locking up". It's almost like the emergency brake is on, but it's not. When backing it down the driveway (driveway is on an incline) when I take my foot off the brake, it doesn't move. I have to give it a little gas- makes no sense because it should start rolling back. Also, when driving and stopping, it seems to pull ot the left. I am really hoping this could just be a drum or bearing problem - a quick fix because Good Guys is this weekend and I really need to get her rolling!!!!

Generally if this was an out of control worn out bearing you would have been hearing it for a while so it's much more likely a brake issue.
Hoist that wheel and feel for bearing lash, and if it will turn by hand - bet not. Gonna have to take the drum off to see if wheel cylinder or parts are jammed up (broken) inside. return springs should easily return shoes back to home base.
If someone put a self adjuster (if equipped at all with those) on the wrong side it could self adjust itself to lock or be way too tight.
Any way - you will have to get in there to see what's wrong. If you find something on that side I strongly suggest doing both sides and inspect shoes as if they aren't even or burned from this now it's really a full brake job and turn the drums which should have plenty of metal at the low miles,

You are correct . Self adjusters didnt come out till 60's Tom.I personnally do not recommend them on front wheels. I would check for a leaking wheel cyl. or a bad flex hose . Flap inside acting as check valve. Setting the brake shoes is critical.

Forgot about the flex hoses - common on some - same design as far as I know,

retro; Agree with Tom G. Also, if this still has the ball type bearings, I'd recommend changing them to roller bearings. Available thru NAPA.
