Hi,

I'm working on a old Chrysler T 120 industrial engine. It is a flat head engine from 1960.

I just install the engine in the vehicle. When I put gas directly in carburetor, the engine start and run like a charm but stop after few seconds. It is clear that no gas arriving from the tank. The engine has a gas pump with a glass bowl. Initially glass bowl was empty. I crank the engine but no gas arriving in the bowl. I filled manually the bowl but I still have the same problem the engine start with gas in carburetor but stop.

Do I need to do special procedure to remove air in gas system or my gas pump is simply dead. How I can test the gas pump?

Thank you

Unlike an electric fuel pump that pushes fuel from the back, the mechanical pump pulls from the front. The most common problem I find in the older cars is the metal fuel line starts to rust and gets pinholes in it. The causes the fuel pump to pull air instead of fuel.

The best way to determine if you have an issue like this is to just get a portable gas can and run a rubber hose to the fuel pump from the gas can and see if it will pull fuel that way. If it runs off the can, then you know you have a problem with either the gas lines or the tank itself.
If it still won't run off the can, then you likely have a fuel pump problem.

I understand that the issue can comes from the line. It is easy to test. I will try to run it from a portable can. Will see if it works.

Thank you

Didn't know Chrysler had a flat head for 1960 doesn't matter. Hammer is correct whatever it is it should be pumping like a jack handle on a cam top of the thing may be a vacuum pump if so check if that's full of fuel or oil of engine filling up with fuel isn't good for engine at all, worse will wreck it.

If you remove it have a gasket ready or can make one it does keep oil from leaking out IDK if you've removed it if it uses a pushrod and missed it a GM thing was a pest if so I'll save the tricks to get those to work.

Can you see if top of where bowl is there's screen? That could be clogged totally. IDK, some you just removed and lit on fire or blew out to clean.

Other to wreck the show. Tank should have a sock for pickup unless it gravity feeds this gasket(s) seal to bowl and hose if not highly rated will be ruined by the ethanol quickly if you can't use "equipment fuel" where you are it will wreck stuff pump is a "REED" valve so can only draw from inlet and push as hard as a spring (hidden) for outlet side. If either has debris (rust mentioned) can push and or pull not just one way each.
A test it should pick up real gas out of a glass jar or container to watch it work? That's REAL glass not some hard plastic and OMG not some water bottle plastic can't take anything including water for long!

Hi,

I did portable tank test. No real success with that. I also remove the pump and try to pump it manually. I ear a vacuum sound but no gas is pumped in the glass bowl.

I do not know if you think there is extra test to run but for me it seems not working.

Do you have great references to buy this type of part?

Thank you

If you are sure you had the hoses hooked up correctly to the pump, then the pump is probably bad.

I don't know where to get one but Tom may know.

You can get this new/cloned was THE way to move fuel when simple gravity was it. I'm near sure almost all you said "flathead" IDK still but same things if a Chrysler product engine said in English "In" and "out" or that obvious. If in you hands now pump it the sound is from the inlet port still didn't say if it's also a vacuum pump that's so flipping old concept no motors used engine vacuum which didn't work going up a hill or underload so use the wasted side of a fuel pump for vacuum.

I only have one left 1948 with a GM exact cut middle two of I-6 engine is same just older so is gravity fed to bowl no pump needed so put carbs down low was the game.
One more if this pump has screws you could take some apart and replace rubber was lousy didn't last does NOW not in 1960 was from a rubber tree - no joke.
Parts if needed probably anything about it if it comes apart you can make yourself if time I do and did when this crap was new or close enough was a luxury to not have fuel in your face up high only pumps could fail so don't do things that could fail if avoidable, Tom
Note: The 1948 is OHV so IDK if Mopars were so late to make a flathead check on that I can't think of one for that model YOU might have an early "slant six" was nicknamed?
