lubricants for 1938 Buick trans and differential Sign In

I have been told that some lubricants for the old transmissions and rear ends will attack "yellow metals" in trans and rearends. Can someone tell me safe lubs to use. I have a 1938 Buick 41

Do pay attention to all that. I can't give you any specifics just some basic issues with changes in oils and fluids. I'm not so sure the metals mind so much but seals, gaskets may not in fact will not like some of the detergents in current to even 40 year old items. Rubber was actually rubber, gaskets could be cork and paper type products, seals could even have used leather. Asbestos in many things alone would be OK but what holds it together matters.

What things might have been already changed with much newer products could be a guess by looks. Just do as much homework as you can. IMO non detergent oils would be the rule in "straight" weights. Right now I can't find plain straight weight #10 oil for a 1948 other thing for hydraulic use and used 30 non detergent and it works but wouldn't like cold.

Just hate to see you eat up the associated sealing things that some detergents could dissolve and things start leaking. Good luck,

T

I dont have a problem with engine oils. My engine has been completely rebuilt with modern gaskets, seals, piston rods with insert bearings hardened valves with seats installed.I use HD 5w - 30 oil. THanks for the info on gear lubs.

You are probably fine. My point is oils back when were mostly just viscosity for items they were used in. Gear-cases would likely be just heavier viscosity than other things. When these were used all year long you did change viscosities for the season. Read containers. TMK wide range oil anything is done thru additives some of which are the problem. HD may mean "Heavy Duty" or "High Detergent" but should say so. That long ago not sure if API rated oils and think the earliest was SAE + API would say "SA" was the first.

Keep in mind some folks just brought a containers and got oils by request,
