transmission relay problems? 1948 Desoto Sign In

I've posted here before. ALWAYS great advice.

1948 Desoto. 6v positive ground, etc..

Car cut-off while driving 3 times same day within a 15 - 20 minutes time period. Got home and turned the ignition switch on. Heard a loud whining noise coming from the transmission relay. Is this an obvious sign that the relay is going bad? Also, are these 2 problems/symptoms related? Thanks.

Is this a loud HUMM of starter spinning but not engaging engine?

If so, and was somewhat common it's the starter drive. Can (if so) be replaced separately from the starter itself but be good at paper clips or wire to hold brushes back AND index mark the starter.

No special tools if that's it........... just pay attention - may have one here (yikes) if negative ground but still available,

Tom

( Edit - Stupid spelling fixed, load is spelled loud now!)

Transmission relay? I'm not up on the really old cars, but I didn't know the transmissions used relays back then.

Hey Tom and Discretesignals.

The sound is definitely not coming from the starter. I turned the ignition on but didn't attempt to turn the engine over. I heard the sound, opened the hood and saw from where the sound was coming. This was on the same day the car cut-off while driving.

DS - Free airfare to New England! (You buy the feathers) No wires to this trans, trust me. If so what would they be for?

Right now own a '48 GM/Kohler/Waterloo {{must have been quite a party}}- (have a headache yet?) engine that runs fine!

OK - it almost certainly needs a starter drive it's called. You would know better the parts sources for now but may be a Mopar part and not so hard or whole starter which isn't necessary if you have the "balls" or gall to open one up - I do.

Yes - known you from times past and know you aren't far from me. Click on my name above the Kitty and send a private message if you want with info not wanted open to the world, email addresses or whatevers.

If I recall you are only about 1.5 or so hours away from me or less.

DON'T DRIVE IT IN OR ON SALTED ROADS!

Tom - 38 miles from NH border........
