Driving Without Insurance

Well recently I got into my first car accident, it wasn't anything too serious but it caused over $1,000 in damage to the other persons vehicle. Also recently I got my renewal for my insurance plan and it went up by like $1,400 so now my monthly bill will be $475 instead of $200. I did pay the down payment so I have a valid insurance card until November. I sure as hell cannot afford this much a month on auto insurance (I could barely pay it when it was $200 a month). My question is what happens if I get pulled over and don't have insurance? I live in Rhode Island and am 17 years old (will be 18 pretty soon). I know you need a valid proof insurance for registration and inspection, the registration is good for two years and the inspection is good for a little over a year. I'm not going to be paying the insurance anymore due to the high increase that I cannot afford.

You want to think hard about that decision. That could be one of the biggest mistakes you ever made. Not to mention the legal implications of towing your car and arresting you for driving without insurance but if you have an accident and cause property damage or hurt somebody else, you'll never be able to afford anything for the rest of your life because the court will take away anything you ever have and you likely won't be driving any more either.
If you can't afford the expenses and responsibilities of owning a car, go get a bicycle.

That's a bad idea for all the reasons HT stated.....
Now let me get into your head...... let me guess your thoughts...... I'm gonna be real careful, I'm gonna drive the speed limit, use my seat belt, look both ways twice..... I'll be ok cuz I'm gonna be so careful from now on.....
Were you planning on getting into that last wreck? There is a reason they call them accidents.......
Don't make a mistake you'll be regetting for most of your life if not all of it...........

Insurance should be competitive so I'd see if another is more reasonable. At your age it may be tough. In Massachusetts if caught without insurance you'll get a heart stopping fine and pretty sure loss of driver's licence. Get caught driving again and forget a license for probably 7 years! Shop for a better price or as said it's bike time,

SUVrider; All of the above is correct. Really sucks being a teenager. BTDT. Whatever you decide, do not go without insurance. Insurance is one of the things you can't afford NOT to have. I know that the 'future' probably seems a long way off, but it will only take one small thing to mess you up financially for a LONG time. I know guys that have been paying for an accident for 15 years and more. As others have said, shop around. Don't know anything about your car, but liability and uninsured motorist are the most important. Comprehensive and collision are the most expensive. All that does is fix your car if the other guy isn't insured. So, if your car is paid off and a beater, you may be able to get the premiums down by passing on that coverage. But, if someone breaks into your car and steals the stereo, or someone breaks your windshield, or crunches your car, you'll have no coverage. Good luck to you, in, whatever your decision.

I have just been on my first accident it's hard if you don't have insurance on you car, very hard you will shoulder all the damages argh..I'm gonna drive the speed limit, use my seat belt, look both ways twice..... I'm gonna be so careful from now on..
