Did my mechanic really change my oil? Sign In

I got a card in the mail telling me to bring my 2015 Nissan Rogue in to my dealer for a free oil change and inspection. I did so on November 10, and 100 minutes after I dropped it off, they told me "you're all set". I was a little surprised that they didn't tell me that it needs additional service, since they have always given me a hard sell every time I've brought it in for service in the past. Today, it's been 5 days and 299 miles since the oil change supposedly happened. I had a couple spare minutes, so I cleaned off the dipstick, reinserted and removed it and wiped it on a white tissue. This is a picture of it:

For comparison, here is what brand new oil looks like on another white tissue from the same box:

The mileage at the change was 156,007.
The mileage when I checked the oil and took that picture today (November 15) was 156,306.

The oil has been changed pretty regularly before this:
July 22: 149,115 miles
March 26: 141,352 miles
...

Am I reasonable to suspect that the oil wasn't actually changed?

That regularly? That's 8,000 miles. That would be the extreme limit for an oil change interval.

Oil will turn dark almost immediately after being changed, especially on a car with that kind of high mileage.
If you need piece of mind that the oil was changed, then just pay someone to do it again.

I use synthetic oil. The guidance I've read is "It's recommended that you change synthetic oil every 7,500 – 15,000 miles."

Thank you for telling me that it changes color almost immediately. I didn't realize that. I won't worry about it, then.

Are you saying that the free oil change was synthetic?

That’s amazing. Never saw anyone give away synthetic.
