The clearcote on an '89 Olds 88 Royale is cracking and pealing off the hood and trunk,

Is there a relatively easy way to remove this mess without removing the paint as well ?

try bringing your car to an autobody shop so the fella
can see it but im pretty sure theres no magic
cream you can rub on wipe off

Clearcoat is just another color (or lack of) paint. It has to be treated just as if it were paint because it is. It has to be sanded and painted over like any other color paint would..

Use 400 wet sand paper and it should take off the clear. then use 1500 wet sand paper to remove all the scratched. This is what normally does hope it will work for you.

#1 - this is an old thread and I'm locking it. I don't think any DIYer should be sanding off paint if they want professional result and this isn't my trade. If you think you can take off just one layer exactly I don't think so as there's no way to know exactly how thick it is that I ever heard of. Thread locked,
