Sign In Hey guys, My dad has a '99 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 litre 360 4x4. He runs the conventional Castrol Gtx 10w-30 which his motor calls for. My question is, would it be wise to convince him to put synthetic oil of the same weight in place of its conventional counterpart? I've explained the benefits of doing so but he's an old school shade tree mechanic that does only what the owners manual says which there is obviously nothing wrong with. He is a real home body and therefore he puts less than 300 miles on his truck a month if that, so would there be any real advantage to swapping the oil seeing as it's only driven that much? Also the truck has a rebuilt engine listed above which has approximately 50k miles on it at this point. Take care of it and it'll take care of you! The synthetic will cost twice as much and last twice as long. Castrol GTX is probably the best non-synthetic out there.
