Gas Cap Stuck On! Please HELP!!!!!	Sign In

I have a 2007 Jeep Liberty with just over 26,000 miles on it. When gas prices began rising, I purchased a Locking Gas Cap but I am no longer sure of the actual model... It does look and operate similar to this Locking Gas Cap I found online at:

In order to remove the gas cap, I have always

1. Inserted my key and turned it to the left a quarter notch
2. Then I simply twist off the gas cap, like a regular gas cap twists off

But I recently went out to buy gas and turned my key but the gas cap seemed stuck. It will not move to the right or left.. I am planning on going to my local Auto Lube in the morning if I can't figure out a solution tonight..;

Any help..

You might try spraying some penetrant into the lock. If it's freezing where you are, you could try warming the key prior to putting it into the lock. (I use a Bic lighter to warm the key, but not near the gas cap

).

Thank you for such a quick response! I have some WD 40.. Should I just spray it into the actual lock where the key goes? The temp dropped dramatically today, so I was wondering if temperature might have something to do with it. .. My key will turn the lock but the actual gas cap does not move once I "unlock" it..

If the key turns in the lock, then the WD40 probably won't help, but it's worth a try. Can you get the vehicle into a garage so it can 'thaw' out? It is possible that the cap is frozen to the metal fuel neck. I can't think of a safe way to warm it up. Anything electric 'can' cause a spark which would ruin your whole day

. Do you have someone with a strong hand that can try turning it for you?
