So i recently bought a used 2000 ford taurus and when i got it there was no power steering. Didn't know why, but never eally put any thought into it until today i realized i should at least try adding fluid cuz that may be the only reason. When I was adding it, the "translucent" container wasnt as clean as i thought, cuz i was watching the side waiting for it to rise and before i knew it the fluid was coming out of the top. I decided it should be safe to at least rive home, but while i was driving, any time i turned it made that "whining" noise related to no steering fluid. I usually know this noise means my fluid is low, but I never heard that before today, when it was completely empty. Why would it make that noise now? Have i messed something up? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Pretty much the warning not to overfill is so you don't make a mess more than anything. You knew it was leaking and now it's sped up and leaks faster probably NOT because of adding this time but you've neglected the leak and now it's going to get fixed. Just hope you didn't wreck the pump or more running with it that low. If you can hear low fluid it's already causing problems. Do that routinely and take out all doubt, T

Your fluid is aerated and foaming up. You need to fill it and then run it for just a few seconds, turning the wheel back and forth once and then shut it off and wait until the foam goes away, then repeat the process. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
