1985 mercury marquis won't start

1985 mercury marquis won't start Sign In

my car won't start... when i turn it on the lights radio and air work, but when i try and get it to start everything turns off. when i release the key back to the on position everything turns back on. i have already tried to jump start it and i have no idea what the problem is...

Sounds like a bad battery cable or starter. If the battery cable is corroded on the terminals, or on the starter end or in between (even inside the cable where you cant see) this will pull all the power from the other accessories while you turn the key. If the starter has a dead short this can do it also.

Start with having the battery tested and once you have full power, check all the cable connections.

Those if still original cables are real lead. the "battery bolt" may have reached it's limit to clean and tighten - common. Can fix that with new bolt + nut, clean with battery brush - all above suggestions possible too,
