1998 Dodge Dakota 2WD 3.9L MFI 6 cyl 178000 mi I noticed a slight chatter sound at start stop. I checked oil is fine however the top hose from the thermostat to the rad very stiff and i am not geting ay heat. I let it cool and checked fluid levels and did have to fill coolent tank to recommended level. drove for 1 hr and noted that the temp was at 180 deg. I changed the thermostat (spring side down) still same problem. removed thermostat and tested all ok and re installed. Now i have a short squeal at warm up but it stops after about 30 sec after. Paid $250 for it and runs great till now no problems. Reg oil changes and clear on the stick. As far as i know nothing has been replaced. should i consider replacing the pump, coolant, hoses and hardware? Also someone recommended using a flush kit but i am afraid to do this because of the age of the gaskets and the chemicals used may do more damage than good. Is this flush kit good or bad idea and should i go ahead with this repair?

I'm a bit confused here............. What is the problem that you are trying to fix? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I am trying to see if the engine running hot is a result of a failing water pump

Where do you get that it's running hot? You stated it was running 180 degrees. That is definitely not running hot and actually a little too cool.

Make sure you have bled all the air from the system. No heat is usually an indication of air pockets.

I did get some air out of the system and did drive it . It did did still read low temp so i went ahead and replaced the water temp sensor cause i did work around it replacing the thermostat. the sensor was bad cause now my temp is in the red i'm guessing 290-300 off the gauge. is the pump bad?
