So i went and looked at this 1999 ford ranger to buy it has the 4.0 v6 with 144k. The truck has a code that says lean bank 1 or bank 2 (im not sure which bank) but none the less i drove it and it seemed like it was working really hard, it just didnt have that snap you would normally expect, but the rpms werent to high, i think it shifted at 2200 and ran at about 1800. Someone told me it needed a tune-up someone else told me it was an O2 sensor. Im going to pull out a plug next weekend and see if theyre burnt. do these predictions sound right?

As you can see a scanner will not tell you how to fix your vehicle as many people imply. It mearly gives you a hint on which way to go. In your case its saying one bank is running lean . You need to find out which bank because it will help during the trioubleshooting .Check the easy stuff first, has fuel filter been changed recently? Any vac leaks including intake manifold. Carefull spraying of some carb cleaner with a straw on can will show this. Look for exhaust leaks near o2 sensors, they allow air into the pipe and skew the readings. Check the egr valve the same way you did the intake . All checks out , you dont have a pro scanner that would allow deeper troubleshooting so now its poke and hope time for the o2. Did you remember which bank was lean ? That will tell you which side o2 to replace. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

would this explain why it sounds like its working hard with low rpms? like i said next week im going to run a compression and vacuum test on it. so they should give me a better idea on how good of shape the engine is again its not my truck yet. I just want to make sure my dad and i can be able to fix it he used to be a shop manager and a truck driver so i trust that we can get it done.
