Firebird Restoration Sign In

Okay...Water pump is in..and she's running beatutifully Wink

I do have a question for you guys though...I am beginning the "Restoration" project on her...She needs some TLC in some areas..

I am finding mostly everything ok...I have a question about 2 things in particular...

1 I need a new shifting nob, and it's an automatic (The stitching has come loose). There are a lot of aftermarket, neat, chrome lookin, knobs. But my question, is even though they say "Universal" are they installable on my car? The only thing that confuses me is the button on the side you press to change gears..How does that work?

And 2 I need a new or reman center console..but can not find it.....anywhere..The lid has broken off and it's not as simple as getting a new lid (Which I found) because the hinges are broken on the base as well..So I need a new console...Any Idea?..........Hammer?

And P.S. if there is a better place in the forum for this kind of post..please don't yell..just let me know...

Best tp start a new thread with a new issue to deal with. Easier for any of us to follow,

Any universal knobs you see would be for a standard trans. They are nothing but a knob with a hole and a set screw with no provisions for releasing the shift lock.

The console could be a much bigger problem. There is really nothing but the original console that is going to work there. You best bet is going to be junkyards or Firebird collector/restoration forums. Your going to need some kind of networking to find that.

Don't worry about what category your in. If we think it should be somewhere else, we will move it.

OK, I detached this portion, moved it and gave it a new title.

Re: Firebird Restoration Sign In

Thank you for moving it.

Well, I am actually finding a few knobs Like this :http://www.jcwhitney.com/brushed-nickel-iridium-shift-knob-with-carbon-fiber-collar/p2003105.jcwx?skuId=200189&filterid=j1&_requestid=10995677

That say they are for Automatic Transmissions, and they have the button, JC whitney listed it as a "Guaranteed fit" I just don't know because my button is on the side, and this is on the top, and how would I even remove the oem?..Just..Screw it off? Is the button attached to something?...I dunno..Anyone done it before? I found the OEM online...for a nice $130.00, and I like the aftermarkets better anyway.

And that console..Yea..I am finding that it's not going to happen outside of networking and Junkyards Frown I found one online saying it will fit a 92..and I wasn't aware of that many differences between the 92 and 94..So I shot an email asking...dunno

Re: Firebird Restoration Sign In

I suppose I'll just have to depress the button..and give it a twist to see what happens...

I don't realy like the "Pilot" Style to that one..cuz I rest my hand on it..So possibly a different "Style" as long as I know it's possible..

Stupid console...Even if I find that in a junk yars..their prolly gonna charge out the yang for it..and it's most likely a nightmare to remove...

Re: Firebird Restoration Sign In

To get your old one off, look for a "C" clip down near the bottom somewhere that can be slid right out and then it pops off.

Re: Firebird Restoration Sign In

Another Question...About 3 years ago..Some kid running the Cart pusher at Walmart...Ran smack dab into my car and put a nice dent RIGHT on the Gas Fill...I can't get to it to pound it out Cuz the wheel well is there...So I am left with like..Bondo...

OR..I can take the fender off and Bang it out/Replace with another...

HOW...do I get that fender off?....Do I have to cut it off?

Re: Firebird Restoration Sign In

You should be able to access that from the trunk or back seat. You don't fill things like that.

Re: Firebird Restoration Sign In

If there is absolutely no access, it can be pulled with a slide hammer but this is a job for someone with body experience.

Re: Firebird Restoration Sign In

Of which I have none...lol..Leaving that to the pros...

One other question...I am assuming it wouldn't be advised to replace my stock sterring wheel with an aftermarket due to the face I am losing an air bag huh?...I mean..it does have a number of controls that run to it that are SUPPOSED to control the stereo Volume...however they don't work dueto the fact I do have an aftermarket Head unit anyway...But it would probably be best to replace with an OEM wheel...Seeing as mine is worn apart...but if I put an aftermarket..the odds of death in an accident are a lot higher..plus I imagine I will constantly get an Air Bag error light...

Yep, you have a pretty clear picture on that one.

Re: Firebird Restoration Sign In

30 years ago I probably would've opted of the cool wheel........ Now, it's a no brainer, I'd keep the safety feature....

If you chose to go the AM route they make a tool that is called an "air bag simulator" basically all it is, is a resistor you hook in to the harness for diagnostic purposes... It enables you to power the system up with the air bag disconnected and not set a code or turn the light on. You could get one & just leave it in the harness all the time.....
