How do you drive when ice accumulates on the windshield?

I am from The South and have little experience in cold weather driving.
I have regular windshield wipers on a regular car (Toyota Corolla). There was a mixture of snow, hail and rain pouring down. My car was inside a garage and the windshield was fine at first. The mixture of snow, hail and rain turned into pure rain. However, had the mixture of snow, hail and rain kept pouring down, I would have had to pull over and wait. My windshield accumulated ice. Small, flat chunks of ice were spread all over my windshield to the point I could barely see the road in front of me. As my heater heated up inside the cabin the precipitation outside also turned into liquid (rain). I could then see again clearly.
If it is just snowing or just raining, my wipers will work. I haven't driven in the hail before. Does anyone have any suggestions if there is a long-duration mixture of snow, hail and rain falling that makes a car's windshield have very little visibility? I'm not sure what I would do if the conditions continued. Maybe the heater in the cabin would warm up the glass and melt the ice outside. It seems like I am doing something wrong. The moment of no visibility was a concern to me.

That's what your defroster is for. A heated windshield will not form ice.

Rain to "sleet" to snow or any kind of ice and changing or getting colder use defrost full blast as said. There is windshield washer fluid rated for colder use or boost that as required. You do NOT need special wiper blades but they are available called "Winter Blades" just are wrapping metal parts in rubber so ice will clear off by hand if needed better.
THERE ABSOLUTELY ARE SITUATIONS OF DECLINING WEATHER, ROAD CONDITIONS, VISIBILITY CONDITION OR OTHER REASONS YOU SHOULD JUST PLAIN PULL OVER AND STOP DRIVING! Please tell me you've never seen or heard of roads being closed or a section of road? OMG. Get off the road and out of the way as realistically possible. As needed other forms of transportation close as well. Airports, rail - anything.
You mentioned "HAIL" ---- there's nothing your car is going to do about real hail which can up to bust thru your windshield and kill you right there so please use another word.
You said you are from the South and totally not used to this. Fine and understood. Stop and get help or don't drive in horrible conditions at all.
There are times in this "Season of Holidays" to travel and sometimes the best thing to do is NOT travel nor make plans to if not up to it for the expected problems and plenty of surprises as well.
Hope you got safely to you destination. Be more prepared for the return trip than this question is asking,

You are definitely going to have to learn how to drive on snow covered or icy roads if you never have before. Don't just head out with no training. The result could be disastrous.

I just gave driving lessons to two grown men from Georgia who are in their first winter in WI a few weeks ago. I will agree with HT, you need to get someone who is from there to go with you to an icy parking lot or something and show you how to control your vehicle. This is a whole new ball game from what you are used to. It is very easy to become very dead if you do not understand how winter roads need be handled.
