Hey, I've got kind of a life decision to make. I've got an opportunity to either do a high school coop at a Chrysler dealership as a mechanic, or at a heavy equipment shop. At the heavy equipment shop, the chances of me getting an apprenticeship is 95% (for argument's sake) and I have no idea how likely one is at the Chrysler dealer. Getting an apprenticeship is my goal, but I'm not sure about heavy equipment instead of regular vehicles. Any advice, or pros and cons, or anything? (18 years old, citizen of both the United States and Canada)

Heavy equipment is not for everyone. You really have to be built for that and understand that it's a far dirtier job that autos. Everything is real heavy, real greasy and real smelly. Personally, I could never do that stuff.

I work on both, and the heavy stuff is just that, heavy. Also as HT mentioned you need the right build for it and can't mind getting dirty. Personally if I was doing it all over again I'd still do the heavy-duty side instead of automotive.

I done a bit of both. I did a 21/2 yr stint as the head tech/dir of maint (the later title given so they did not have to pay overtime) of a 300 acre sod farm . I was responsible for a gamut of equipment .....3 tractor trailers ,a road grader , 5 sod harvesters,a couple of 3500 pickups ,and 6 big red honda atvs. I had a crew of 3 . Yea it was big and dirty , BUT,the money was very good ,you did not have customers looking over your shoulder , there was penty of work , and at this place the benifits were better . When i worked at the dealership (GM) It was dog eat dog , flat rate,( some can beat it some cant). customers were always bitchin. etc,etc. If i had it to do over i would have stayed put and remained a aircraft a&p tech.
