Moving a car without Registration Sign In

Admins, I do not know the appropriate place to post this question. So feel free to move it wherever.

Now for my question. My brothers car was broken down out of state for a very long time. A Mechanic picked it up for us. And it's ready to bring home. The problem is that the thing has been outta commission for over a year. And now has no Insurance or Registration. And I need to get it home! I do not have the money or time to tow it. (and I know you're gonna say "It'll cost more money for a ticket!" but If you understood my current situation you'd know).
Anyway! My only plan of action is to Drive it down, have my brother hang on my butt for the 5 hour drive and pray we don't get popped by the Highway Patrol.
Does anyone know of a better way? We can't renew registration because the registration is with the car, and it has no proof of Insurance which is required. Does anyone know of a loop hole? Like a drive out Tag? Of if he signs a bill of sale saying he sold me the car, a temporary tag for 30 days? Just a way to get it from point A to B without getting tons of tickets?
Side note: I have 20 days to make this happen.

There is no way to beat the uninsured and that's a pretty serious charge too. Have you considered renting a car trailer?

Re: Moving a car without Registration Sign In

I am driving a Honda Accord. I don't have another vehicle capable of Pulling it. :/ Or I would. I would end up having to rent a truck and trailer. Which I do not have the money to do...

Honestly, I would risk the Insurance. As long as I had a valid tag that if Ran, wouldn't red flag me and have me pulled over... I just need to get it here. I have heard terms like "Drive out Tag" and "Temporary Tag" and the like...Just wondering if anyone had any Ideas..

Insurance agents and car dealers can issue temp tags. Got any connections there. You wouldn't be eligible for anything legit.

Ge aware of something now. Driving with an expired tag is just a ticket in most states. Attaching a tag from a different vehicle is criminal and you will be arrested. I believe the no insurance is an arrestable offense too.

First off I wanna say that you are so halpful Hammer Time lol Always.

Secondly I will say that I actually DO have a FEW connections with Dealers...in THIS state. And maybe I can see what they recommend...

Also, I looked it up and and believe Max penalty is License Suspension. $20 Re-instatement fee...

Also. I would NEVER attach another tag.

The penalties of putting a tag from another vehicle on that one is worse than driving without one if you get pulled.

You don't know anyone with a truck and trailer that can tow the thing for you for a few packs of beer?
How much would it cost to have a towing company move it for you? (probably outrageous)

Nope. Honestly I haven't lived in this area long and do not know too many people with trucks, and the ones that do, wouldn't help.

And it would cost a lot more to tow than I have to pay, also the car is in the middle-of-nowhere Missouri, and I've found few companies that would even help..

If the paperwork is in the car why don't you have the mechanic express mail it to you. Then you can go down to the courthouse and get it reinstated after getting insurance.

Middle of knowhere in missouri? Get on craigslist and advertise that you need someone with a carhauler trailer to pull it. You can negotiate your price beforehand. Plenty of hillbillies that needa few bucks and will pull it. Even if you needed the rent a trailer from uhaul you can find a cletus with a truck.

Renting a small u-haul truck and a tow dolly would be cheaper than the fines and a possible night at the graybar motel . Not to mention if you got stopped on the interstate you would likely have car impounded. Take a bus ride up there , Cheapest way short of a thumb . Rent truck one way from there. If you try to "sneak "it down that distance you WILL get caught. Plus if you ran into a hapless motorist and no insurance, you would get the pants sued off you.

Re: Moving a car without Registration Sign In

Hope this is solved by now. I don't know why this is such a hurdle? MA is and has been a pest for ages for legally driving a vehicle. A few times have just brought proper papers and plate with me in person or by mail. You do need to prove you have ownership and no back taxes owed.

Just one snag is there's only a 7 day grace to get it inspected which must be done with the vehicle in this state. MA like others issue either "repair" or "dealer" plates that TMK are for temporary use issued only to repair or sales enterprises if one will let you use one.

Other worry with this situation is the car has been away so long do you trust it to make the trip at all without a problem? Towing seems the best choice for this case - T

That wouldn't solve the registration/insurance problem as it would still have to be registered to use a dolly.

Re: Moving a car without Registration Sign In

This is messed up state by state so you ask your own DMV what you do or how it can be done. Dolly if a trailer registered on it's own might work. If someone can't prove ownership I think they are screwed.

Examples for me: NH doesn't require insurance w a clean record! Some places the registration is permanent and stays with the vehicle! Here (MA) if you are living in this state more than 90 days you must register vehicle here! Exemptions have to exist for students.

Here again: Anything about the dang vehicle or owner that is not up to date can cancel anything or future transactions with MASS.DOT! Yup, a silly parking ticket that someone took off your windshield or blew away you don't know until something needs renewal! Gets worse in some areas - vehicles are scanned by passing law enforcement of just parked cars on a public road or place and owner of the plate # can get a violation. Same with not paying a toll the ID of the car is noted and ticket sent to owner. Unpaid or dealt with stops the whole show for any more DOT anythings until cleared up.

Worse possible: A car left for repairs unpaid for for a XYZ period of time can get a "Mechanic's Lien" and that person or shop owns the car and can sell it!

This person just needs to have the papers in order, know the car is ready and still owned and deal with papers needed for places it would be IMO.

I really don't know why anyone would leave a car for repair out of area or even close by for that long at all. That car anywhere near me would have racked up a $2,000 buck storage charge (+/-) on top of the repair bill.

OP needs to have thier ducks in a row on all fronts. Hey - we aren't here to solve this mess...........
