Ok, another non technical car question!

I am on a fixed income, so I plan on keeping my 2003 Toyota Echo until it falls apart (literally). It currently has 112,685 miles on it. I have not had any major transmission or engine problems yet. I have only had to do the routine stuff like oil changes, buy new tires, brake jobs, spark plugs, and I had the serpentine fan belt replaced @ 100,000 miles.
Questions? I know it is impossible to predict when I will have a major engine or transmission problem but everything eventually fails sooner or later even with the best preventive maintenance. I do have a followup question that I will post under this same thread a little later. My question is how much can I look to pay for having a remanufactured engine or transmission installed (unit + labor). Just a ballpark estimate. I want to have this money saved just for this purpose at some time in the future (hopefully, a very long time from now, LOL). Should I let the dealer do this? My local NAPA repair shop advertises they can do this. Thanks in advance for any replies.

When not if was the last timing belt done? Some engines will self destruct if they break or even jump valve timing and without warning it's game over to some.
How long can it last with some reasonable care is really unknown. Engines usually give you some warning but a trans can go out light a light.
Keep up with all suggested maintenance and drive gently really helps. I don't know of anything particularly wrong with the Echo and IMO with care as said can go a lot longer,

Timing chain, not a belt on this engine.

That would help but the site I use listed some that were belts and didn't know which engine but probably only one used??

Ok, thanks Tom, Hammer, and re-tired. I have never had the timing belt or chain (don't know if I have belt or chain) replaced. Is this something I should consider having done? Is this a major repair job?

No, I don't think it was a typo.........

Thanks Hammer. I have never had the transmission serviced. How important is this? I know some people say don't have the transmission fluid changed unless you have been doing this regularly. I have never had it done and I have 112,000 miles on this car. Do you think I should have the tranny serviced now or just take my chances? I do check all my fluid levels periodically. Thanks!

That's not real high mileage in today's standards. Just check the condition of the fluid. As long as it's not dark brown and burnt smelling and it's driving OK, then your good to go.
