Question for Auto Mechs About Shop Storage Sign In

Howdy all,

I'm in an architecture studio class for school and we are designing a polytechnic college to be built in rural Tanzania. The initial phase is to include the colleges of building science, agriculture, and auto mechanics. I'm currently trying to figure out what amount of space will have to be built for storage in this beginning phase. If any of you have experience working in a shop your input would be greatly appreciated.

1) Approx what percentage of total space in the shop is devoted to storage?
2) Is the storage inside the main bay or in a separate location?
3) What is needed to be kept in storage?
4) For a shop that has the capacity to work on 2-3 cars at a time with about 75 students learning/helping do you have an idea of how much sq ft should be devoted to storage?

Thanks for any and all help you can give.

Re: Question for Auto Mechs About Shop Storage Sign In

A shop working on cars has way different requirements than a school that uses it as a classroom for 75 students. I would think it unrealistic to have 75 students in a shop that could only work on 3 cars. Also, you wouldn't have nearly enough instructors to even be able to teach such a large group. I could see 8-10 cars and 20 students with one instructor and an assistant being about the minimum.

I would look into touring some local tech school shops in your area and asking the instructors what they feel they need and what they would change if they could. Its something you really need to see for yourself, random numbers and locations on a piece of paper won't make much sense without the in-person perspective. It would be a shame to have a school built all the way out there and when they try to use it finding it was designed poorly for the purpose.

I should have clarified that it will likely be three different class times each with ~25 students in each class and there will be a classroom attached to the shop. Do you think that most everything could be stored in the garage or do you think an external structure would be needed for storage?

Re: Question for Auto Mechs About Shop Storage Sign In

Much of your question will depend on what you intend to keep in stock at the shop.

Is everything you need available locally?

Will you be buying chemicals and supplies in bulk to save money?

Will you be stocking any parts, if so what?

Regardless of the answer you would want to keep storage in a secure place, out of sight and locked so keep that in mind.
