My question may come off as odd or rather silly but I'd like some guidance. First off I am going to be a Freshman in College majoring to become a computer programmer. I have always had a little bit of a desire to learn about cars and such and my dad has always been out on the road working. For this reason i haven't been taught many things and so eventually, over time, I'd like to learn how to repair cars, rebuild cars etc so that I can pass down these neat tips to my son, when i have children, if he is at all interested. Anyway being 18 I do have some credit cards granted they don't have crazy high limits but I like to charge little small purchases on them each month. Let the "bill" come and then pay them off immediately. This is a good way to build up credit and I get to buy things in the process. Instead of me wasting the money on fast food I wanted to do something more useful. I have decided to watch those online websites that post good deals on things and wait for good deals on tools to come up. That way I can purchase random small tools that will be good for my future. Do you feel this is a good idea? What tools specifically would be good for me to begin buying just to start building up tools for my garage? Is the trick just to start small and continue to build? Keep in mind I have a good 5, 6 years before I have my own home and garage etc so that is plenty of time to start to buy tools etc. Anyway besides figuring out what tools are good what can I do in the meantime to learn about cars and such? I can't pick up a junker and tinker with it, no room at the house. can't take college courses (doesn't fit into my major and already maxed out credit wise). Would it be best to read books? Like repair manuals and such? Even though they may be dry reading is that the best I could do for now? I just wanted your thoughts. If your going to college to learn computer programming, you should focus all your attention on that. Don't worry about the other things right now. Those things will happen in due time. Save your money while your in college. Once you accomplish the goal of completing college, you can take on the next challenge in your life. Heck, you might get into writing programs for automotive manufactures. That would be interesting. Auto tools and equipment will not be cost effective for DIY things and you seem to have a plan. Go for that and good luck. Trust the pros, excel at what you do and it should all work out. Ya - car stuff seems so expensive and a place to save a buck but watch out as you probably won't save if after tool$ too. Smile. You are about the age of my CAT!
