Rear wheel bearings Sign In

Hello carjunkies, new to the forum and looking forward to learning from this group.
Im 53 years old and been making truck payments my whole life,so back in 1995 i went to the dealer and bought a brand new S10 2.2 2wheeldrive and told myself that this was going to last as long as it can,Im going to drive until the wheel fall of,then Im going to stand the wheels back up and drive some more. Well its has gone well,I do all my own work, like I did a head job about a year ago and i replaced the timing chain and gears about 4 months ago and the motor runs like new,I keep the the oil changed religously..

Well now the the reason Im here,,,This weekend i was going down the highway at 65 miles ahour and and started hearing a loud wining sound and it was bad,so i stopped and looked under the truck and oil was coming out of the left back and it was smoking bad,,I know what was wrong (wheel bearing) OK,,I called my brother to come rescue me with a trailer and got the old girl home, Backed her in the garage, put her up on jack stands and started taking it apart,,I took the wheel off, took the cover off the pumkin, then i removed the the C clip and took a slide hammer to the axle,,,,, now here is the problem,,,, It won`t come out,,,Can anyone tell me why???????

I don`t won`t to hurt the the old girl

If you opened the differential and removed the center pin and then the "C" clip. then the axle should slide right out. If it's not moving, then it has to have something to do with the failure. The bearing may be stuck on the axle but I've never seen that happen.
I assume you have the brake drum off, right?

Thank you sir for your input,Yes i did remove the brake drum, but the brakes and the plate,my Haynes did`nt say that,I just tryed the slide hammer and it did not help, what i think has happened is that there is a peace of metal in the housing and has stopped it,,,I think i need a new rear end. I just hammered it back in and tommorro, get in there and try to find that metal...I`ll let ya`ll know.

With the "C" retainer removed it shouldn't require a pulling tool?? Does that wheel spin free with both rear wheels off the ground? Bearing on other GM used the axle as the "race" - perhaps it got so bad it melted which makes this a harder job??

Re: Rear wheel bearings Sign In

Well guys last night I broke a 10lb. slide hammer trying to get the axle out and i had a mechanical friend come by and he said that all the gears and bearings in the rearend were shot and to just replace the whole thing,so this morning i call around and found two,,,one for $150 and one for $200. So today Im taking the rearend out and taking it with me.
Any input would be appreciated. Im liking this forum,,you guys are great. THANKS
