The queen of the shop. Sign In

How do you guys deal with this guy?

Last week (there have been several things besides this) he walks into my stall after they pulled in a much needed gravy ticket with about 4 hours worth of services and plugs. He picks up the ticket and looks at me and says, "f**k you, I sold the trans flush" and walks away. I walk up to my advisor to do what was right and tell him that the other guy needs the flush, he sold it. After I get done with the work I pull it into his stall, after that I walk away and hear a LOUD noise...I turn around he is smashing his stereo with a hammer screaming. A day prior to that he walked out on the job because he had to do 2 lofs. He has acted like this for a long time, he is the SHOP FOREMAN for christ sake, everyone wants him gone and now he is becoming more and more of a distraction to the rest of us. And it's becoming harder and harder to ignore it. What can I do?

And who the hell made that great decision?

Obviously someone in a position of power doesn't agree with you or is not aware of the problems.

Re: The queen of the shop. Sign In

Sounds like this guy has some anger management issues... If it becomes a big enough problem, it usually takes care of itself one way or another. If he's one of the top producers then a lot of the time management will turn a blind eye so that factors into it as well and does suck.

I don't know the whole story on the ticket but I usually don't split tickets. If he inspected & it came back then the whole ticket is his. If he's just trying to get his name on it after the fact then the whole ticket is yours. If I get a ticket someone else inspected & they tell me before I start on it, I'll let them have it back. If they come up once I've already got into it, then it's too late....

I can't speak for the whole world just the shops I've been in but with stuff like that going on you just have to deal with it yourself. I've dealt with a few guys like that before and they are usually all talk. Once things have come to a head it usually gets better......
Obviously you don't want to do anything that would cost you your job but on the reverse if it's got to the point where you can't work anymore then something has to be done. I know most places tell you there are steps A B & C to do for this situation and maybe it works in some places but the shops I've been in going that route would only make things worse...

I know this probably isn't the "PC" answer but it's just reality for the shops I've been in....

Re: The queen of the shop. Sign In

He WAS the top guy before we bought out the other gm dealer, now their head guy is the top earner. I'm sure that bothers him, and I do believe that they turn their heads. He has thrown water in peoples faces, he leaves work whenever, screams and is just a dick.

Now as far as the ticket goes, he upsold a trans flush 5 months ago when the customer was in for the last lof, they wanted more work and thus it was all just pulled in to me, I think I did the right thing by going to the SA because I'd want the same treatment if it happend to me.

Im sorry to complain, just had to ask anyone for their expierences with people like this.

Another prime example how the flat rate system brings out the love in everyone. Crazy

I agree with Sidom. I'd just lay low and keep doing what your doing. He could be having personal issues, money problems, and/or the shop manager is putting him under pressure. The worst thing you can do is get involved and add more to his problems.

Now if he is throwing things at you that is different. Who knows what could be in that cup when he dumps it in a person's face. That would be assault and should be brought up to management.

Re: The queen of the shop. Sign In

No problem..........It helps to vent sometimes.....As long as you do it in the right section.......all is good

Yea if he's not the top dog anymore then it could be a case of hurt feelings.....That's one of the problems with flat rate is you have a human dispatching it......I've been on both sides of the fence.

If he feels he's being starved, I can see the temper tantrums.....don't agree with it but can see it.....If he's right & he is being starved, then it sounds like management is already on this problem & handling it......This one of the ways they take care of a problem child..........

How big is your shop a small ,med , large independent or a dealership. .If ind you prob have to follow my friends sugestions. If a dealership then BTDT.Go to your service mngr. and calmly say your mind . no demands just ask how the mngr what is expected of the other techs in the shop when he explodes . odds are good ,if you have a servce mngr worth a Sh!t that he willl say , just ignore him and I will speak to him one on one . After all if the"show" happens when top managment is around it could be egg on HIS face.

Wow no wonder mechanics have such bad reputations, you guys sound like a bunch of spoiled cry babies. You are probably selling stuff they don't need. If some dude told me to f off on the job I would kick his ass on the spot . If I were female I would sue his ass for sexual harassment. You all sound like a bunch of con artist with a wrench. They will probably kick me off now but I call em like i see em. The dude who smashed his radio what a loser.

That wouldn't be a smart thing to do. Not only would you lose your job, but you would end up in the slammer.

Just curious, but why are you adamant towards mechanics?

Well if it were an aggressive f off with a tool in hand or any aggression what soever it would be self defense besides i wouldn't hurt him just make squeal a little. Oh I am not adamant about mechanics, just con artist, which it sounds as though they are from their post.

Re: The queen of the shop. Sign In

I've personally worked in other fields before making auto repair my lifetime career. I can say that your going to encounter disgruntled employees and conflict in any work place. That's just the way it is.

You can have con-artists and thieves working in any career field, so to type that mechanics working in the field and mechanics that give up some of their time and knowledge to help others is here are con-artists and cry babies is a little judgmental don't you think?

Re: The queen of the shop. Sign In

I am just referring to the post that I read. There was one guy telling the queen to f-off then smashing his radio, then he cried about his ticket that the queen was trying to weasel him out of, at the same time the guy was crying about a transmission flush that he had "sold" If it needs "selling" Than I would question the validity of it needing to be done at all hence my reference to con artist. Yea I find most feilds with high ego's and testosterone a bit annoying that's why I'm quick with kicking someones ass on the job or not for acting like a jackass. Besides the guy is probably pissed that the woman is a better mechanic than he is or for any other man in her shop. I know I'm a smart ass and God bless you all for helping I just wanted to see how you all would react I'm pretty impressed.

Re: The queen of the shop. Sign In

I agree the queen is mental and has issues and this post is just like what my mother watches in the afternoons after The View.
The OP was just wondering how to handle the situation and there is some good advice. I know if I worked in that shop I would just steer clear of him or let management deal with him if he is threatening or harassing people. He won't last long if he continues with that mentality.

If he comes at you with something, then ya it is time to defend yourself. Someone else will probably end up wiping the floor with his ass anyway..maybe yourself would have the honor of that...LOL.
