catalytic converter Sign In

My engine check light came on and the dealership said it indicated that the catalytic converter needs replacement ($1000). It's a 2014 chevy cruise with 114,000 miles...
What's the risk of not replacing it?

Removed your address - you don't want to do that you'll get spammed out of control.
? What led up to this needing this if true? I ask because if you take any care of the vehicle they last well longer than that. What code did you/they get if you can find out?

Don't wait too long or you really will wreck what's there beyond a chance. It this isn't running properly like a skip it's going to throw codes that DO NOT NECESSARILY MEAN REPLACE A PART but fix a source problem.
You asked what's the risk: It's illegal in most places if inoperative just not convinced yet @ 4 years old unless you neglected a problem and really harmed it.
What it can do is plain not run well at all if really bad, lousy fuel mileage, loss of power and harm other sensors behind it.
Try to get another opinion and a full code reading and second opinion. Yes it's possible to need it but may beat that estimate some,

If you have emissions inspections in your state it will fail.

Re: catalytic converter Sign In

Totally true - it would fail for use on public roads in many places here if only a heat shield for it or other exhaust part was missing also! Tom2604 - just fix it and the cause if failed. They are part of the whole vehicle for the very best of performance. It's part of the design and would cost you other problems if failed or missing cost you a fortune in other problems, T

Re: catalytic converter Sign In

What was the trouble code number(s)? Hopefully they inspected for vacuum leaks or air leaks in the exhaust near the O2 sensors.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
