coolant question Sign In

Hi,

I'm a newbie when it comes to cars, maintenance, etc. So I just recently had a change oil with one of the car dealers and knowing that the brand of my car is the dealer itself, I was expecting they will proactively check the tires, status of brake pads, etc

Just now I washed the car and open my car hood and found out that the car coolant is very low, I thought they would advise me about that but they didn't. What brand of coolant do I buy and do I fill up the whole coolant tank?

Thanks in advance
TECH-JEFF

Newbie to cars: First know and post the Make, Model year, engine size at least.
Vehicles have or should some form of "owner's Manual" nobody ever looks at that state all specified fluids most will suggest using dealer only. Whatever format a manual is for this have it and it's boring but look thru it, one line versions or IMO better paper book kept in car so if nothing is working it's there.

About all parts outlets will crossover car maker's named products to assorted brands of the same products.
If dealer serviced as you said didn't you get a copy of a check list of items that were checked stating what was done and noted? If not, why not?

Onward: Get a service schedule that states when assorted things should be serviced by both time and miles. Follow it there's lots to just do routinely.
Back to just coolant level and types: What were you looking at that suggested to you it was low at all? A tank with a "high or HOT level or range Hot and Cold" is common.

That will vary if like that according to engine temperature is why a range. If not always in that range you need to find out why not.
What do you wan to do? Learn more about cars or leave it to a dealer or independent shop? You decide that it off warranty I suggest you get a regular shop where you go dealer or independent to stick with.

Do that and stick with it,

T

Here's what the service manual says

Engine Coolant

Type .................... Mixture of antifreeze and distilled water (Ethylene glycol base coolant for aluminum radiator)
