I am thinking about buying a 1970 dodge dart 2 door hard top with no engine or transmission. I want to eventually build it in to a " muscle car " but for now i just want it to run flawless and be great on gas. Any suggestions on engine and transmission im trying to keep the cost to a minimum for now. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.

You are hallucinating. Most would have been 225 slant six that was plenty or 318 V8 that was overkill and both were pigs. If you want straight line, rubber burning power just go for an OE V8 drivetrain in full. If you really want to blow bucks you could mess with axle ratio for 1/4 mile times. It will guzzle fuel, handle like crap but were great common sense grocery getters of the day,

What does the body look like? If it is a rust bucket in need of major body work, you could be getting into a whole lot of money. If you have the money and time, i'd say install a modern EFI drivetrain. Would be nice to have something like a sequential fuel injected 318 or even a 4.7L with a 4 speed automatic in an older vehicle like that. Just an idea.

But realize that good on gas for this, no matter what you do to it aside from bolting in the hand of god, is low to mid 20's on the highway. I'd go for the EFI for sure with either a 5 speed stick or 4-speed auto. This car has the aerodynamics of a brick and was made with steel not plastic. It would be a fun project, but you can't make it sip fuel like a Prius.

I had a '69 with a 340 that I used ro race on the weekends and it can make a pretty awesome muscle car but if this thing came with a 6 cylinder, you might as well scrap the whole idea because nothing will be strong enough such as front suspension, cooling system and differential will not be strong enough to carry the V8. I bent all the rear lug studs on mine with the torque.

A 340 mated to a 904 sipping gas from a 650 Carter AFB . putting power to the ground with a 8 3/4 pumkin with 3.73 gears and an aurburn posi. will do the trick.
