I am replacing the rotors and installing new pads on my 1996 4 cylinder Dodge Grand Caravan. In removing the caliper I see that the rails which the pads ride on have alot of rust. Although the instructions with the pads call for applying grease provided with the pads along the rails should the rails be filed some before installing the new pads?

At some point if what you are calling "rails" are out of spec they would have to be replaced if what I'm thinking is what you are referring to.

Use proper brake lube just where it belongs. Rust should scrape off with a gasket scraper. File might or might not be the best tool. Is this rust on a bracket or whole assembly on this application?

Rust with some piting is on the rails. The rest of the assembly is not that rusted.

Works for me. Some that use brackets are heavily sand blasted if sold as a reman whole assembly. I've had some nice shinny ones all redone w exchange that should have been tossed too,
