good solvent Sign In

I recently had the pleasure of replacing a cv axel with a torn boot. There was grease everywhere; tools, cloths, floor, and all over the suspension. What's a good solvent to clean all this grease (wife takes care of the cloths).

I don't need admonishment, but I used gas. Yah I know ...

I was thinking of buying some kerosen. Unless it's expensive, what do mechanics use.. if anything at all.

Thank you.

Either of carb/intake cleaner or brake cleaners work well USE PAPER you can buy a box a cloth like paper "Rags in a Box" it's called.

Ventilate the areas well and careful of painted things or rubber things.

IMO kerosene stinks, I mean odor that lasts longer that what I mentioned. Most mentioned are flammable - use all care with that.

Good luck and make wire happy don't wash greased up cloths. Many shops use a "rag" service swap for clean ones periodically I never do cut myself on metal shards stuck in those never forgotten so don't and won't,

Gas is a bit dangerous. Mineral spirits would work a lot better. It is flammable but nowhere near as bad as gasoline.
