neon water pump replacing questions. Sign In

In the process of replacing the water pump on my 1995 neon. All I need to do is remove the camshaft pulley, then remove the rear timing cover. But can't get the bolt loose and saw on youtube you get a socket, extension. and ratchet and put them on a rear timing cover bolt and wedge it against the pulley so it won't move. Then use another ratchet to remove the bolt. My problem is in order to do this I would have to rotate the camshaft clockwise around 3" or so.Should I put the timing belt back on . So far I haven't removed the spark plugs. Should I remove the plugs and then use a dowel rod and rotate the crankshaft until the first and fourth piston is at least an inch or so lower than the top of the cylinder .Then remove the timing belt again then rotate the camshaft around so I can use the ratchet to wedge next to the pulley and then loosen the bolt. Also do I need a puller to remove camshaft pulley or should it come off fairly easy. Then after replacing the water pump how would I reset the timing without causing any problems. Also is there a installer used to put the camshaft pulley back on. Sorry if this sounds confusing just don't want to cause any problems.

This is an interference motor. Don't rotate it or bad bad things happen. You did align the timing marks prior to removing the timing belt right? There is no puller or installer tool for your cam gear. It sits on a keyway and is held on by the bolt. There is a tool that looks like a channellock pliers made to hold your gear still while you break loose the bolt. You could try putting your belt and tensioner back on and see if that would be adequate to break loose the cam bolt.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 through 8
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the right inner splash shield.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belts and power steering pump.
  4. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  5. Securely support the engine from the bottom, then remove the right engine mount.
  6. Remove the power steering pump bracket bolts, then set the pump and bracket assembly aside, but the power steering lines do not need to be disconnected.
  7. Remove the right engine mount bracket.
  8. Remove the timing belt tensioner and timing belt, as outlined later in this section.
  9. Remove the camshaft sprocket(s) and inner timing belt cover, as outlined in this section.

Fig. Fig. 1: Unfasten the timing belt tensioner bracket retaining bolts ...

Fig. Fig. 2: ... then remove the bracket to access the rear cover retainers

Fig. Fig. 3: Remove three 3 inner timing belt cover retaining bolts ...

Fig. Fig. 4: ... then remove the inner timing belt cover to access the water pump
  1. Unfasten the water pump-to-engine attaching screws, then remove the water pump from the engine.

Fig. Fig. 5: Unfasten the water pump retaining bolts ...

Fig. Fig. 6: ... then pull the water pump away from the cylinder block
  1. Remove and discard the water pump O-ring, and thoroughly clean the mating surfaces.

Fig. Fig. 7: View of the water pump body (1), impeller (2) and O-ring (3)

Fig. Fig. 8: Thoroughly clean the water pump and cylinder head mating surfaces To install:
  1. Install a new O-ring gasket in the water pump O-ring groove. Hold the O-ring in place with a few small dabs of suitable silicone sealant.

WARNING Before proceeding, make sure the O-ring gasket is properly seated in the water pump groove before tightening the screws. A improperly installed O-ring could cause a coolant leak.
  1. Position the water pump to the block and install the retainers. Tighten the retainers to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm). Use a pressure tester to pressurize the cooling system to 15 psi and check the water pump shaft seal and O-ring for leaks.
  2. Rotate the pump by hand to check for freedom of movement.
  3. Install the inner timing belt cover, timing belt and tensioner.
  4. Install the right engine mount bracket and engine mount.
  5. Refill the cooling system with the proper type and amount of coolant.
  6. Install the power steering pump and accessory drive belts.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Use a DRB or equivalent scan tool to perform the camshaft and crankshaft timing relearn procedure, as follows:
    1. Connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (located under the instrument panel, near the steering column).
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON , and access the miscellaneous screen.
    3. Select the re-learn cam/crank option, then follow the instructions on the scan tool screen.

These work good for holding the sprocket while you get the bolt off. You'll need it to hold the sprocket when you go to tighten the bolt.

There is another trick, but you need an old timing belt and a large set of waterpump pliers. Cut the old belt and wrap it around the pulley. Then lock the pliers around the sprocket while someone gets the bolt loose. Make sure the pliers are facing the right way.

If your going to have the sprocket off, you might as well replace the crank and cam seals while your in there. Ain't no sense in having an oil leak after you have done such a wonderful job installing the water pump.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
