I saw a U tube video once and this guy had a real dis like for fram oil filters ,he was doing horrible things to them but didn't say exactly what the problem was . Is there really any difference in off the shelf oil filter quality ?

Re: oil filters Sign In

This is highly subject to opinion and tests IMO aren't credible.

If you seriously want the highest rated go for Wix or Napa's Gold filters and pay up the butt too. What you seem to get is at least the metal oil filter housings are stronger and less apt to puncture or squish on you later like the super cheap have to me from some other place.

Gets to be opinion because it's my thinking that if it's so critical other than not blocking oil flow somehow an engine that gets cared for doesn't have much to filter out.

I do think up to know that quality synthetic oil of proper viscosity is still superior and worth the extra cost and even that has all kinds of "urban lore" about it that you can't start on a used vehicle or mix with conventional which is bullcrap - you can just stick with the rating for the vehicle,

I agree with Tom that this is subject to opinion and that applies to the Napa filters also.

I have always considered Fram to be one of the best filter brands.

Re: oil filters Sign In

To beat on this just a bit and quit it. I think Fram has made a cheaper type and better type and do use Fram now just all my own stuff not taking on oil changes or much anymore.

Napa has a Silver and Gold line. Silver is scaring me now by them just holding it seems like it's going to bust!

Just FYI and I never used them as in EVER. If you do enough oil changes you can buy by cases of filters once real cheapo no name ones were just a dollar for any. Those just felt horrible again just in your hand and could squish one easily. Dread see those and will leave the last name they were called out as they would also put your name on them if you bought enough - scary,

Well thats good enough for me . I don't know what his problem was , maybe he wasn't as smart as the filter and had to blame something . Some people go nuts with torque on the filter and plug . I've heard it here and dealt with it myself . Thanks .

Re: oil filters Sign In

You asked for and about a brand. Do read or know instructions on each vehicle and filter how much to tighten them. I just forgot but thought Fram marked arrows on some so you could count from where it first seated.

They differ by type of engine how tight is right and TOO much isn't good up to causing a leak.

Good thing most places (observed) or folks don't do and can is to fill the oil filter when one can hold oil by the way it's installed before putting new one on. Then you avoid that death rattle for a few seconds some do which isn't good for an engine with zero oil pressure for that time while new one fills up,

Re: oil filters Sign In

I guess a lot would depend on what the application is. I've heard people say Fram is junk but I've used them for years and with never an issue. But I have seen some good videos that explain for Ford applications why going factory is better. This is in reference to the diesel trucks in particular. The reasoning is that Ford likes to keep things proprietary and therefore if Fram, Wix, Napa etc. exactly duplicate the filter they are infringing a patent. Therefore they cannot make the same filter. I know that in Powerstroke applications going with injectors anywhere but the dealer does cause issues because of the same sort of thing. This is because the electrical solenoid on them is made by Seimens but under licence from Ford, and they will not allow them to sell it to anyone else. Thus, any reman injector from other than ford cannot have a new solenoid as they won't sell it to them.

Not sure about other applications on this issue, but for you regular gasoline powered car I have never seen a difference on any of them. O'Reilly is my nearest parts house so the only filters I have installed for years are Masterpro and have never had a single issue. But then again I've never had an issue with any oil filter that wasn't caused by the person putting it on. My two cents anyhow. Happy new year guys.
