Hi I am Austen Kirchmann from ST. Patrick’s Technical College and I am currently doing a research project in one of my classes. I am currently researching How to perform a basic service on an Au Fairmont? And I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer some questions to help with my research development. Questions: · Would it be better to use a synthetic engine oil rather than real engine oil · Is there any order that you should service a car e.g. should I change the oil before I change the air filter? · Can coolant fluid loose its effect of keeping the engine cold after time? If so how often should it be changed? · Am I better off buying car gaskets and air filters over the internet? (will it be cheaper) · Should I be doing maintenance checks on my transmission regualy?

My answers to your questions inserted below. Questions: · Would it be better to use a synthetic engine oil rather than real engine oil A - Proper;y rated oil for the vehicle is enough. Personal but I like properly rated synthetics. · Is there any order that you should service a car e.g. should I change the oil before I change the air filter? A - No. It's good to check air filter and replace as needed at oil change recommended intervals. · Can coolant fluid loose its effect of keeping the engine cold after time? If so how often should it be changed? A - Ethylene-Glycol based coolant/antifreeze doesn't loose it's freeze protection by itself but additives for anti- corrosion do wear down. Change intervals suggested in operators manual should provide detailed time and mileage/kilometer of when to do that for each vehicle and what type. · Am I better off buying car gaskets and air filters over the internet? (will it be cheaper?) A - Your call on that. I suggest original equipped grade of parts used for almost everything. · Should I be doing maintenance checks on my transmission regularly? A- Again, follow suggestions for each vehicle for maintenance intervals. Correct fluid or gear oils only. Good to check levels at oil change intervals and when/if found low it should mean you then find out why. Different vehicles will use different products for fluids. Proper oil viscosity for engine oil and same with gear cases and transmissions. Some warranties by new car makers may and do require either dealer only parts and fluids up to dealer only service for warranty to remain in effect. (note - whole page spell checked automatically by my own program for that) T

All the way from Australia eh? St. Patricks's tech school looks like a place I wish I could have gone to when I was going through tech school. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I spotted a few design flaws with that one. It chatters at high speeds, too much rear end wobble and the intake is placed way too close to the exhaust. Still, I'd ride it.
