I need some basic advice on how to shop for used tires. I know how to look out for dry-rot and uneven ware but is there anything else? Any advice is appreciated.

Not recommended by me at all with few exceptions. Search out sales on new proper sized and rated ones. AYOR with much of used anything,

No matter. Cooper and Hankook have reasonable pricing. Watch out for the buy one, get on free or discount tricks. They may make it up with outrageous charges for new valve stems, mount and balance and a back handed high charge to dispose of old tires.

Get a finished total price up front no matter what route you go. Yes - there's a popular used tire place right near me. It's part of a salvage yard that I don't use but been around for decades. A place like that has a chance of keeping very good tires as a vehicle comes in seeing why it's being salvaged helps. I still don't like used tires unless for a brush trailer used locally

Times are tough I understand that, believe me. But tires and brakes are the main things you do not want to go cheap on (cheap meaning low quality). Used tires are a big gamble. You need to check them out completely. Look for tread depth, sidewall damage, wear patterns etc... if I was buying them I would have them mounted on my rims and then do another inspection before buying them (Harder to hide any defects after mounted, easier to hide not mounted in my opinion). Just my .02 I'm sure others will chime in
