tranny service every 15k miles?

Hi: This is a general question for discussion. Would having an automatic transmission serviced every 10k miles (instead of following the manufacturer's service schedule which is usually much longer interval between servicing) tend to extend the life of the transmission? This question came up on SuperBowl Sunday among my car-guy friends. Several of us have had automatic transmissions 'blow-up' below the 60k mile mark (this happened to me twice!), and someone said that he had heard that frequent servicing can extend the life of the transmission. He has his serviced every 15k miles. And in my case, yes I ALWAYS follow the manufacturer's schedule for all routine maintenance, never use my car to tow anything, etc. I think the transmission Gods just hate me What do you guys think? Thanks!

Good clean fluid kept at moderated temps sure helps extend the life. Changing it is the way to clean and renew the fluid with the properties of it (additives) kept fresh which included anti-foaming, ability to act like a solvent and suspend dirt for the filter to catch. #1 in trans life is how it's driven and some just don't do as well as others no matter what you do T

Just out of curiosity...what year make, model was your vehicle/vehicles???.. Just wondering what exactly failed in your transmissions... I know some that have it done every 15k,some every 30k,some every 50k,some 100k some not at all...lol... I personally think every 30 k would be fine if your looking to do it more than what the manufacturers recommendations and it's not being used for anything but normal driving conditions...in normal type situations... But it sure never hurts to have fresh fluid and filters ....

And a good transmission cooler helps a lot. Even if you do not tow anything. Stop and go traffic creates an extreme amount of heat in the transmission. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

The vehicle in question was a 1997 Ford Contour. Would high altitude have any effect on a transmission? I live at 7500ft. Thanks for the advice!

I wouldn't think so, I do agree with these guys, driving habits/ changing fluid/and adding an extra cooler to the system would extend the trans life. One thing I have learned is heat kills trans and people overlook the the fluid when the radiator over heats.
